Smile or frown lines are one of the first signs of aging to appear on the face. Contraction of the muscles when you smile or frown create these lines in the skin, eventually leaving a permanent reminder on your face. While these lines are a natural part of aging, they can make you look upset, tired, or older than you prefer. Botox cosmetic is an FDA-approved injection to combat these emotion lines and help you look more youthful.

If you live in Napa or Sonoma and have been considering learning more about cosmetic treatments to help you appear younger, come see us at our clinic in Mill Valley. Dr. Evan Ransom is an experienced and highly credentialed facial plastic surgeon that offers Botox cosmetic injections and many other surgical and non-surgical treatments to fight aging. While Botox injections are available at many locations, having the expertise of a plastic surgeon can improve your results for a more natural appearance.

How Does Botox Work?

You probably have heard about Botox for many years. It is one of the most popular medications used to treat lines and wrinkles. However, you may not know exactly how it works. Botox contains a neurotoxin called clostridium botulinum, which is safe when used in small, injectable doses. This bacteria interrupts nerve signals to the muscles where it is placed, stopping the contractions that make lines and wrinkles. Injections are often used on the brow and around the eyes to soften the “crow’s feet” and “11” between the eyebrows.

Since Botox limits muscle contraction, it is important to get the right dose to still allow normal expression in the face. Too much can leave the face looking “frozen” and unnatural. Dr. Ransom carefully administers Botox to our patients to achieve excellent results that can last four months or longer.
