According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. “In fact, more skin cancers are diagnosed in the US each year than all other cancers combined.” They go on to say that “You don’t need x-rays or blood tests to find skin cancer early- just your eyes and a mirror. If you have skin cancer, finding it early is the best way to make sure it can be treated with success.”
In order to use your mirror and your eyes in detecting your skin cancer, you must first know what your skin normally looks like. There’s no way of detecting something abnormal if you don’t know what “normal” looks like in the first place.
Did you know that experts at locating and discovering counterfeit money say they do this by examining a genuine dollar bill? They look closely at the real dollar to know what it looks like, it feels like, its shape and its size. After the constant exposure and familiarity with a normal dollar bill, anything else feels abnormal.
The same idea applies to detecting abnormalities on your skin. If you look at and examine closely your healthy skin, you will quickly be able to identify anything abnormal and unhealthy. Take time to get familiar with your skin. Look at yourself in the mirror often and watch for anything that seems abnormal.
