If you are bothered by an aging neck and want to redefine the contours of your jawline, a neck lift might be the perfect procedure for you. This is everything you need to know before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Evan Ransom, a double-board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in face and neck procedures.
A neck lift is a popular facial plastic surgery procedure for patients who want to address signs of aging in the neck and jawline. Natural aging gradually causes the skin to lose elasticity and volume, resulting in wrinkling and sagging skin. The muscles also weaken, contributing to the development of prominent vertical necklines (platysmal bands). Dr. Ransom uses several advanced techniques during neck lift surgery to address all these concerns. Loose skin is removed, the underlying tissues and muscles are changed to restore a more naturally youthful position and the remaining skin is carefully tightened to smooth and contour the neckline. A platysmaplasty is often included to tighten the neck muscles and removal of fat may be required in some cases.
Understanding each step of a neck lift procedure at Ransom/MD can help you feel confident in your decision to receive surgery. This is what you can expect from beginning to end:
A consultation is the first step in any surgical procedure. Dr. Ransom will assess the neck and the quality of your skin, ask about your concerns, and discuss your medical history to make sure a neck lift is right for you. The best candidates for a neck lift are healthy men and women who are bothered by moderate to severe skin laxity (loose skin), neck wrinkles, prominent vertical neck bands, jowling, and/or excess fat below the chin (double chin). This procedure can also be beneficial for patients who want to address loose skin and stubborn fat after significant weight loss.
A neck lift is typically performed under general anesthesia, meaning patients will be asleep during the procedure. Once sedated, Dr. Ransom will make incisions under the chin or around the ears where the scars can be easily concealed. The entire procedure takes about four hours.
After neck lift surgery, patients will have mild to moderate swelling and bruising for about one week. Most patients can return to work and light activities after 1-2 weeks but strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least four weeks or until patients are cleared by Dr. Ransom. It is necessary that you follow all post-op instructions for a comfortable and safe recovery. After a few months, most of the swelling will be gone so patients can see the final results of their procedure. Many patients state that they feel at least 10 years younger. In addition, the rejuvenated youthful appearance will last for many years and doesn’t “wear off” like nonsurgical treatments.
Patients seeking more comprehensive facial rejuvenation can benefit from a combination procedure. A facelift is commonly performed with a neck lift to address signs of aging in various areas of the face for a harmonious result. Chin implants can also be included with a neck lift for patients concerned about their weak jawline or the look of a double chin. By addressing multiple signs of aging or other cosmetic concerns in a single surgical session, Dr. Ransom can maximize the results and minimize recovery time.
