When Should You Receive Rhinoplasty After Breaking Your Nose?

San Francisco & Mill Valley, CA

Posted on October 13, 2022 in Revision Rhinoplasty

Although rhinoplasty (a “nose job”) is often regarded as a cosmetic procedure, revision rhinoplasty or septoplasty can be performed to repair the nose after facial trauma. If you break your nose, it is important to visit a plastic surgeon as soon as possible and create an effective treatment plan to restore the function and appearance of your nose.

Why is it Important to Visit a Plastic Surgeon?

When your nose is broken, the problem should be treated as soon as possible so that the nasal bone and cartilage will not heal incorrectly. More specifically, rhinoplasty is usually most effective when it is performed within a few weeks after the break.

A plastic surgeon has the medical skills and artistic vision necessary to improve both the appearance and function of your broken nose. Dr. Evan Ransom, MD, specializes in both cosmetic rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty and will work with you to develop the most effective treatment plan.

Why Should You Have a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty after a nasal break is especially important to repair the functional and aesthetic nature of the nose. There are two options you can choose, with the guidance of your doctor, to fit your specific health concerns and aesthetic goals: open or closed rhinoplasty. Open rhinoplasty is more invasive since the top of the nose is opened, but this technique may be necessary to get a better view of the nose and effectively repair the internal structure.

Reasons to Have Rhinoplasty Surgery

Enhanced Appearance

A broken nose can create a crooked appearance, flattened bridge, or dorsal hump, resulting in an unaesthetic facial profile and a negative self-image. Both cosmetic and revision/functional rhinoplasty can improve the appearance of the nose. Sometimes these procedures are combined for patients who were already unhappy with the appearance of their nose before breaking it.

Improved Function

When the nose receives facial trauma, the septum can deviate, or the nasal passage(s) can become blocked. This interior damage is possible even if the nasal bone is not broken. A deviated septum or blocked nasal passage makes it difficult to breathe properly and can cause sinus problems or trouble sleeping.

Prevent Future Complications

After a nasal injury, blood rushes to the area and causes internal and external bruising and swelling. If the break is left untreated, a blood clot can develop and deteriorate the cartilage over time. This can cause your nose to collapse which is a much more difficult injury to fix.
