The nose is the central feature on the face that can enhance or detract from the eyes, mouth, and overall appearance. A nose that blends into the face without attracting attention is desirable by many people which is why rhinoplasty, or “nose job,” is such a common facial plastic surgery. At our office near Napa and Sonoma, we offer personalized rhinoplasty for our patients wanting to reshape or resize their nose for a more attractive appearance.
Rhinoplasty is performed in one of two ways: open or closed. This refers to the method of incision and the detail of the surgery. Closed rhinoplasty is performed through an incision inside the nostril, hiding it from view. Although this procedure can be used for minimal revisions to the bridge of the nose and has a quicker recovery time, it is not the best option for more detailed nose reshaping or resizing.
In an open rhinoplasty, the incision is made in the columella which is the cartilage between the nostrils at the base of the nose. This allows for more access to the tip and other areas of the nose when more precise reshaping is necessary. Dr. Evan Ransom, our experienced facial plastic surgeon, uses both open and closed techniques at our clinic, choosing the technique that will get the best results for our patients.
