As a form of light therapy designed to minimize the appearance of age spots, sun damage, broken blood vessels, rosacea, wrinkles and more, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) combines the power of multiple wavelengths for cosmetic and therapeutic purposes. IPL treatment is often referred to as a photofacial; yet, the unique therapy is also suitable for hand rejuvenation. Specifically, individuals with sun damage and precancerous spots (including actinic keratoses and seborrheic keratoses) benefit from IPL treatment when it is combined with other light therapies to reverse damage from the sun and build collagen.
Given the body’s natural aging process, along with a significant reduction in collagen and elastin, skin appears thin and saggy. The hands are no exception. Specifically, red, brown and purple spots develop on the hands, often called liver spots. However, when delivered to pigmented areas of the skin, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) works to break up areas of discoloration. At the same time, IPL boosts collagen and elastic production. Thus, as skin spots begin to fade, the structure of the skin is rebuilt and its texture appears healthy and youthful. Because IPL therapy is not limited to one wavelength, treatment is personalized according to a patient’s unique skin color and the degree of damage and/or aging.
IPL for hand rejuvenation is completed in less than thirty minutes, as light therapy is delivered using a handheld device passed over the skin. Though patients may experience a slight burning or stinging sensation, most claim that pain is minimal. While there is no downtime following treatment, the skin of the hands could appear red or irritated. In this case, applying a cold compress helps alleviate tenderness and/or inflammation.
