Why Do Young People Get Plastic Surgery?

San Francisco & Mill Valley, CA

Home  | Our Blog |  Why Do Young People Get Plastic Surgery?

Posted on December 5, 2023 in Plastic Surgery

When it comes to plastic surgery, there is no “right age.” Plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures are becoming increasingly popular among younger patients, especially those in the millennial generation (born between 1981 and 1996). Patients as young as 25-30 can benefit from a facelift or neck lift, as well as many other procedures, if they have a concern about their appearance or wish to refresh their look. These are some of the main reasons why plastic surgery is becoming more popular among younger patients.

Delayed Family Planning

Members of the millennial generation are more focused on education and their careers, which means they often get married later compared to previous generations. Higher education often means high-income careers so people can make money sooner and start saving money in their 20s and 30s. This allows them to do more things for themselves. In previous generations, most people who were unhappy with their appearance had to wait until later in life when they had the time and money necessary to undergo plastic surgery.

Wellness Generation

Millennials are sometimes called the “wellness generation” because they are more focused on healthy eating and exercise compared to previous generations. Plastic surgery and rejuvenating procedures are part of this focus on wellness and self-care. Rather than seeing plastic surgery as something only for celebrities, millennials have made cosmetic procedures more commonplace.

For example, someone in their early 30s might be heavily into fitness and is in good health but still struggles with stubborn fat underneath the chin and is therefore bothered by their double chin. Liposuction is a great option to refine this problem area so that they can continue to focus on their health with more confidence and a positive self-image.

Prevention Against Aging

Starting in your late 20s, the skin will start to lose elasticity, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. As natural aging progresses, these problems will worsen. A facelift or neck lift can be used to target these concerns before they worsen. Dr. Ransom offers many types of facelift surgery, including the mini facelift which is designed specifically for early signs of aging. Non-surgical procedures like microneedling, laser treatments, Botox, or fillers can also be considered as alternatives to surgery or in combination with a surgical treatment plan.

Social Media

Social media plays a few different roles in the rise of plastic surgery. First is the desire for people to look and feel their best in front of a camera, but there is a bit more to it. The rise of social media has created a new outlet for patient-directed information that is easier to access and digest. If people have had an aesthetic concern for some time, they can find social media content that addresses those concerns and offers solutions.

Dr. Ransom has his own social media pages that he uses to bridge the gap between patient and physician. Of course, the best way to gain reliable information is to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon, so we encourage patients to come in for a consultation if they are considering surgery.
