Sagging skin, wrinkles, and jowls are all common signs of aging as the skin gradually loses collagen and volume. Dr. Evan Ransom is proud to offer a new, advanced system to address these issues non-surgically: Profound RF Microneedling. This procedure can be performed in our San Francisco office under local anesthesia alone and requires minimal downtime, making it an excellent alternative to a surgical facelift for many patients.

What is Profound RF Microneedling?

Profound RF Microneedling is an FDA-cleared microneedling system that uses radiofrequency energy to enhance results. Profound uses temperature control technology to precisely target RF energy in the form of heat to the reticular dermis layer of the skin, which is where most collagen is found. This allows for more control when stimulating collagen production without damaging other layers of the skin.

Profound RF Microneedling is an excellent minimally invasive option for tightening skin and boosting volume, especially in the mouth and cheek areas. This treatment is suitable for sagging, volume loss, wrinkles, fine lines, and jowls. In addition to these signs of aging, Profound RF Microneedling can be used to reduce scars, including acne scars, for many patients.

Benefits of Profound RF Microneedling

There are many benefits of Profound RF Microneedling, even when compared to other RF Microneedling systems. Thanks to Profound’s advanced and precise heat control technology, patients can often reach their goal results in a single treatment session. The treatment is also safe and suitable for patients of all skin types and skin tones, even those with a history of post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH).

Profound RF Microneedling is also incredibly effective. Clinical trials by the makers of the device saw a 100% response rate for reducing lines and wrinkles after Profound RF Microneedling treatment in addition to a 95% response rate for skin tightening.

Another benefit of Profound RF Microneedling is that the treatment is versatile and pairs well with other minimally invasive options. For example, Dr. Ransom may suggest pairing Profound RF Microneedling with injectables for a non-surgical facelift.

Candidates for Profound RF Microneedling

Most patients who have some signs of aging or minor scarring are good candidates for Profound RF Microneedling. However, those with certain skin conditions, such as active acne, eczema, or psoriasis, should generally avoid the treatment as well as any type of microneedling. Patients who are pregnant or have medical devices including pacemakers and defibrillators should also avoid Profound RF Microneedling. Finally, some patients with more advanced signs of aging, including severe sagging or facial folds, may not see significant results from Profound RF Microneedling and are better suited to surgical options such as a facelift. During a consultation, Dr. Ransom will evaluate your overall health and the concerns you wish to address to determine whether Profound RF Microneedling is the best option for you.

The Profound RF Microneedling Procedure

Before Profound RF Microneedling treatment begins, local anesthesia is injected into the treatment area. Once the area is sufficiently numbed, Dr. Ransom will begin applying the handheld device to the skin to create micro-injuries in the dermis using 12 microneedles which are heated using a disposable cartridge. These microneedles will deliver radiofrequency energy to the reticular dermis, heating tissue to 67 degrees for three seconds. Dr. Ransom will then lift and move the device to treat another small area of skin until the entire treatment area has been addressed. The process generally takes about 45-75 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Recovery after Profound RF Microneedling

After Profound RF Microneedling, you can expect some swelling, redness, and potential bruising. Swelling is typically at its worst a few days after treatment, but should be resolved within a week. Most patients are comfortable returning to their routine 2-3 days after treatment, but some prefer more downtime to allow swelling, redness, and bruising to subside further.

Typically, results from Profound RF Microneedling begin to be noticeable within two weeks. Ad new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid continues to form, results improve. Final results from Profound RF Microneedling are usually seen 3-6 months after the procedure.
