When preparing for facelift surgery, it can be helpful to know what to expect during each stage of your recovery. While the recovery process may vary for each individual, understanding the phases of recovery and following your postoperative guidelines diligently can promote a smoother and more successful outcome.
A facelift is a cosmetic procedure that rejuvenates your face by addressing wrinkling and skin laxity to create a more youthful appearance. Dr. Evan Ransom, a double board-certified head and neck and facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, offers several facelift options, including the mini lift, endoscopic midface lift, and, most popularly, a deep plane lift. At your consultation, the quality of your skin will be examined and your surgical goals will be taken into careful consideration to determine the best technique for your personalized procedure.
Facelift surgery typically occurs as an outpatient procedure under sedatives or general anesthesia, lasting between 2 to 6 hours. Patients usually return home the same day with specific instructions for postoperative care.
Here are come things you can expect during your recovery:
Immediately after surgery, you will be wrapped with compression garments to minimize swelling, small drains may also be placed to manage fluid drainage, and of course, sutures. Within the first week, the compression will remain on for the entire week, the drains will be removed from 1-5 days after surgery, and the sutures will generally be removed after your first week.
Caregivers play a crucial role during this phase, ensuring patients’ comfort and safety. Pain medication is often only needed during the first 24 hours, with follow-up visits scheduled for incision evaluation and dressing changes. Swelling and bruising peak around days 3 to 4, but pain usually subsides by day 4. Light activities are encouraged to promote circulation and aid in the recovery process. Its important to sleep at an incline during this time.
During the second week of recovery, swelling and bruising diminish, although residual discomfort and sensations like tingling or tightness may persist. These sensations are typically not a cause for concern but if you have any questions, our office is always available. Most patients feel ready to return to work by the end of this stage, though strenuous activities should still be avoided.
By weeks 3 and 4, patients start to see noticeable improvements in their facial appearance. Some swelling may persist, but patients can gradually resume normal activities while taking precautions to protect their incisions from sun exposure and applying scar creams as needed.
After one month, patients should see significant improvements in their appearance, with minor swelling, tightness, and numbness gradually subsiding over the next few months. Continued adherence to postoperative instructions, including sunscreen use and scar management, is essential for optimal healing and long-term results. However, all normal activities, including strenuous activities, can be resumed by week six of recovery, or at the discretion of the doctor.
